The 12-acre Rockville Town Square is the kind of development that makes “new urbanism” fans smile. The developers succeeded in creating a mix of retail, restaurants, residences, and public space while maintaining a focus on pedestrian traffic. On a warm afternoon, the plaza at the center of the community is full of frolicking kids, shoppers, and businesspeople on their way somewhere important. However, the thing that might give a visitor pause is that it’s all a bit generic. While the development is in the middle of Montgomery County, it could easily be located in Reston, Silver Spring, or even National Harbor.
